World Book Day!! One of my favourite books is Night watch by Terry Pratchett. Imagine Life on Mars meets Les Miserables. On the eve of the birth of his son and the 30th anniversary of the Glorious People's Republic of Treacle Mine Road, Commander Vimes is whisked back in time whilst taking down a murder. Back 30 years to a time when Vimes first joined the Watch where he must take the place of his original mentor John Keel and teach his younger self how to be a good copper, and change the outcome of a bloody rebellion. However, if he wins, he's got no wife, no child and no future.
Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably Priced Love and a Hard-Boiled Egg.
Introduced to me by my sister, the Discworld series is one of my all time favourite set of books ever. Originally my favourite characters were Rincewind, the wizards under Mustrum Ridcully, Susan StoHelit, and Death. I can remember reading The Fifth Elephant for the first time and not fully getting it and only later realising I was missing previous backstory and context for Vimes. Now Vimes is one of my favourite characters, with his moral sense of right and wrong but also that fact that he at times has to contain the Beast which just shows how human and relatable his character really is. It's also great to see his character progression through the series from a drunk who doesn't really give a damn, to one of the most respected and feared characters upon the disc second only to Vetinari himself.
It's is just a shame that with the dead of Sir Terry, we will never find out what becomes of Vimes, see Sam Jr grow up and what his next obsession is, the fruition of Vetinari's Undertaking, or what trial Moist is put through next.
